Abstract

The Effect of Hand-Held Finger Relaxation to Decrease Blood Pressure High of
Elderly
Abstract
The elderly who have hypertension there is an increase of about 50%. Management for patients
with hypertension is pharmacological and non-pharmacological. One of the non-pharmacological
techniques is finger grip relaxation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of finger hand￾held relaxation techniques to reduce blood pressure of elderly. This type of research is an experimental
study using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample used
was 51 respondents who had hypertension in the integrated healthcare center of elderly. The sample
was divided into 26 respondent in the experimental group and 25 respondents in the control group
by means of the purposive sampling technique. The data of the research were analyze by using the
Man-Whitney. The results showed significant results, there was an average difference between blood
pressure in the control group and the experimental group with a P value of 0.000 (P < 0.005). Based
on the results of research on finger hand-held relaxation technique to decreasing blood pressure in the
elderly with hypertension, it can be concluded that there is a significant decrease in blood pressure in

the intervention group in the elderly who had hypertension between before and after being given finger
hand-held relaxation. Suggestions for future researchers are that the time used can be longer regarding
finger grip relaxation techniques on blood pressure, examine other factors that can affect hypertension
in the elderly and also how to overcome them.
